I came across this article from  which talks about how composition works and why. I am looking into composition that a photographer would use as I feel it will be beneficial to myself when putting together my scenes. I feel this initial blocking out the my scene will be the time to concentrate on the rule of thirds, getting it correct at this point would help in the long run. I must consider the rule of thirds from multiple angles as when I render out turntable views of my scene I want to keep it interesting. Using the rule of thirds will help me draw the viewers eye the the more important elements of the scene which will help me construct some type of narrative. So why is this important for my project? Well I would like to create something more than just a few models on table, or what ever the scene will be. I found a great example of the technique being used int he video below:Īs you can see most of the shot are clearly planned to be split into thirds both vertically and horizontally.

They summarise the technique as this: ‘The rule of thirds states than an image is most pleasing when its subjects or regions are composed along imaginary lines which divide the image into thirds - both vertically and horizontally’.Īs my composition is going to be in 3D space my tutor Gareth Sleightholme suggested looking into the rule of thirds in film and TV as they use the technique in 3D space when creating sets etc.

A nice overview of the technique can be found here. Rules of thirds is a technique used by painters, photographers, film makers and almost every other visual art genre. Whilst researching composition techniques the ‘rule of thirds’ kept cropping up.
